ORA’s Northeastern Network (Sudbury-Manitoulin) Professional Learning Opportunity:

What are the languages of an ecosystem?
How do we tune into and hear languages that are not our own?
Why is this important in our work with young children?

A day long professional learning opportunity for early childhood educators, kindergarten teachers, pedagogical leads, and artists who work for and with young children.

Sophie Pheasant, Anishinaabekwe teacher of early childhood educators, and Sophie Edwards, environmental artist-geographer-poet, will share their personal journeys to listen and learn from – and with – the land. They will engage us in processes that will assist us in learning to hear the languages of an ecosystem, build new connections with this web of life, and be more attuned and responsive to hearing and supporting other languages in early childhood classrooms.

We will be outside as much as possible (so dress for the weather), eat together (bring your own litterless lunch and snacks and your own cup for water which will be provided).

We welcome speakers of various languages including English, French and Anishinaabemowin.

Intentions for the day

To spend time with the natural world (emphasis on time, perhaps repeated exposure)
To reflect on relationships using different languages (kinetic, found elements)
To deconstruct and re-learn about the process of documentation – what is documentation, what it means to document
To reflect on how listening to an ecosystem and to its multiple languages supports our work with young children

Quels sont les langages de l’écosystème?
Comment pouvons-nous nous mettre à l’écoute et entendre des langues qui ne sont pas les nôtres?
Pourquoi est-ce important dans notre travail avec les jeunes enfants?

Une opportunité d’apprentissage professionnel d’une journée pour les éducateurs de la petite enfance, les enseignants de maternelle, les responsables pédagogiques et les artistes qui travaillent pour et avec de jeunes enfants.

Sophie Pheasant, enseignante autochtone auprès d’éducateurs de la petite enfance, et Sophie Edwards, artiste-géographe-poète environnementale, partageront leurs parcours personnels d’écoute et d’apprentissage de la terre. Elle nous engagera dans des processus qui nous aideront à entendre les langues de l’écosystème, à établir de nouvelles connexions avec ce réseau de vie, et à être plus à l’écoute et plus réactifs à l’écoute et au soutien d’autres langues dans les environnements de la petite enfance.

Nous passerons la plupart du temps dehors (donc habillez-vous en fonction de la météo), à manger ensemble (apportez votre propre dîner et vos collations sans déchets ainsi que votre propre tasse pour l’eau qui vous sera fournie).

Nous accueillons des participants de diverses langues et sommes prêts à animer en anglais, en français et en anishinaabemowin.

Intentions de la journée

Passer du temps dans la nature (accent mis sur le temps, éventuellement exposition répétée)
Réfléchir sur les relations en utilisant différents langages (cinétiques, éléments trouvés)
Déconstruire et réapprendre le processus de documentation – qu’est-ce que la documentation, que signifie documenter
Réfléchir sur la façon dont l’écoute d’un écosystème et de ses multiples langues soutient notre travail avec les jeunes enfant

Registration closes on May 30th. All registrations must be accompanied by payment.

Registration for this event is limited to a small group. We will create a waiting list if response exceeds our capacity.

The Ontario Reggio Association reserves the right to cancel this event if a minimum number of participants have not registered or for other unforeseen reasons. That decision will be made by June 1. In that event, all monies paid for registration will be refunded. ORA will not be responsible for any other costs incurred.

We will be spending significant time outdoors, so participants will have to dress suitably for weather and ground conditions. It will be black fly season, so come prepared!

Participants are asked to bring their own litterless lunch and snacks. In keeping with our commitment to reducing harmful impact, we also ask that you bring your water bottle, and mug. Tea, coffee and water will be available on site.
