Canadian Study Week 2024 in Reggio Emilia, Italy
The Ontario Reggio Association is excited to announce that we are organizing a Study Week in Reggio Emilia, May 20 – 24, 2024. We are seeing a significant increase in interest in deeper engagement with the pedagogy that honours the intelligence of children, educators and families, and that strongly influenced our provincial document, How Does Learning Happen? Hundreds have participated in our Piazza ORA series with Tiziana Filippini, and thousands participated in the professional learning associated with the Mosaic of Marks, Words, Material exhibition and atelier that was hosted in Toronto, Sudbury and Ottawa this past spring. Educators who have come with us on previous Study Weeks have said that the experience changed their life. Loris Malaguzzi described the thoughts and aspirations of the families whose strong determination was the foundation for the first school and ongoing development of a system in Reggio Emilia, “…expressing a universal aspiration, a declaration against the betrayal of children’s potential, and a warning that children first of all had to be taken seriously and believed in.”
The Study Week will begin on Sunday evening May 19 with a reception at the Loris Malaguzzi International Centre (LMIC). The week includes full days of presentations by the pedagogistas, atelieristas and teachers, and visits to infant-toddler centres and preschools. The LMIC also includes a documentation centre, exhibits and ateliers that you can visit. It is an intense experience, and the rich conversations continue beyond the borders of time and place.
Lunch is provided each day, and hotels typically offer a continental breakfast. Dinner is yours to organize, with a rich choice of options. There will also be opportunities to visit the Remida Centre, and to learn more about the city and its culture. There will be optional cultural activities such as a visit to a dairy where Reggiano Parmigiano cheese is produced, and a factory where balsamic vinegar is made. Participants arrange for their own transportation and accommodation. These costs are not included in the registration fee. The city itself is wonderfully walkable. We will provide a list of hotels, and guidance on ground transportation from airports. Those details will be posted on our website in the fall.
We will be offering opportunities to gather on Zoom for those who wish to learn more about what a study week entails prior to registering, from those who have been there. Registrants will also have opportunities in late winter to prepare for the richness of the encounters with the educators and schools in Reggio Emilia.
The fee (in Canadian dollars) for the Study Week and administrative costs is as follows:
Early Bird registration opens on September 15, 2023. The cost is $2,300.
The full fee to be charged beginning on January 16, 2024 is $2,400.
Registration closes April 15, 2024.
