ORA Initiatives
The Ontario Reggio Association is excited to announce that we are organizing a Study Week in Reggio Emilia, May 20 – 24, 2024. We are seeing a significant increase in interest in deeper engagement with the pedagogy that honours the intelligence of children, educators and families, and that strongly influenced our provincial document, How Does Learning Happen? Hundreds have participated in our Piazza ORA series with Tiziana Filippini, and thousands participated in the professional learning associated with the Mosaic of Marks, Words, Material exhibition and atelier that was hosted in Toronto, Sudbury and Ottawa this past spring. Educators who have come with us on previous Study Weeks have said that the experience changed their life.
The fee (in Canadian dollars) for the Study Week and administrative costs is as follows:
Early Bird registration opens on September 15, 2023. The cost is $2,300.
The full fee to be charged beginning on January 16, 2024 is $2,400.
Registration closes April 15, 2024.
The Mosaic of Marks, Words, Material exhibition and atelier tells the story of research done in Reggio Emilia’s infant-toddler centres and preschools on mark making and drawing woven with narrative.
When the exhibition and atelier come to Ontario in the spring of 2023, there will be various ways to engage and participate. Please see details below about three different opportunities to experience this exhibition and atelier.
The Ontario Reggio Association is hosting the Mosaic of Marks, Words, Material Exhibition and Atelier from the infant-toddler centres and preschools in Reggio Emilia in 2023, in Toronto mid-March to mid-April; Sudbury mid-April – mid-May; and Ottawa mid-May – mid-June. This exhibit focuses on children’s mark-making and the relationship with intertwining words and stories, “creating an intelligent and often poetic mosaic” (Catalogue of the exhibit, p. 15).
In order to prepare for the presence of the exhibit, we are offering an online series based on the rich and thought-provoking catalogue of the exhibit, published by Reggio Children. The series will be guided by Patty Randall and Gabriela Garcia from the North American Reggio Emilia Alliance (NAREA). The exhibit has been in Atlanta (NAREA’s home base) since 2019, and Patty and Gabriela have had rich opportunities to study it with educators and families.

The Ontario Reggio Association invites you to join us for a study of the book Braiding Sweetgrass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Board member and proud member of Curve Lake First Nation Michelle Taylor-Leonhardi will guide conversations about the many gifts this book offers for educators in Ontario. Given the growing awareness of the importance of children’s encounters in the natural world, we think this book will open up possibilities of different readings and deeper, perhaps different relationships with the land, water, air and all forms of life.
Tiziana Filippini joins us again for Piazza ORA 2021, an 8 part series beginning on February 16, 2021.
